Cards Inc.

日本語 · Japanese flashcards

Japanese words that stay learned.

Cards Inc. is a flashcard app for Japanese vocabulary. It brings each word back just before you would forget it, gives every word a sentence you can read with furigana and tap into, and writes out every kanji stroke by stroke. It works offline, and it never asks you to sign in to study.

JLPT N5 · NOUN

東京

とうきょう

Tokyo

東京(とうきょう)の夏(なつ)はとても暑(あつ)いです。

Summers in Tokyo are very hot.

The back of a card: the reading, the meaning, and a sentence to meet it in.

Spaced repetition

Three buttons. The schedule is handled.

Rate each card Again, Good or Easy. A word you know comes back later every time; a word you missed comes back in minutes. Start from the JLPT N5–N1 decks, or build decks of your own as you go.

new card — again 10m · good 1d · easy 3d; good every time → 1d → 3d → 8d → 20d → 50d …

Tap to look up

Tap any word inside a sentence.

Words the dictionary knows sit on a hairline; tap one and its entry opens over the sentence, and an inflected verb finds its dictionary form. Reading a word this way is never counted — the free plan’s 5 searches a day apply to the search box, not to studying.

Readings over the sentences — never over the answer.

Every example sentence carries its readings above the kanji, so you can read it before you know every word in it. The word you are being tested on never shows its reading: that would hand you the answer.

Stroke order

Every kanji, written out stroke by stroke.

2,638 kanji from KanjiVG, written out in order — the newest stroke in coral, starting from the dot where the brush goes down — or stepped through one stroke at a time. All of it lives on the phone, so it works with no signal.
